Our
good
friends Bert and Anne Raphael just celebrated their fiftieth
anniversary in a big and caring way: They crossed the country from
California, to celebrate with old friends up and down the East Coast!
Many of us helped them get married back then, and a bunch of that old gang came together near Boston to help them celebrate again on Monday,
May 21st.
Bert and Anne met through IOCA, the Intercollegiate Outing Club Association
(as did Jill and I). That's how I met Bert, too;
we were both in the RPI OC. College outing clubs still hike, camp,
square-dance, rock-climb, canoe and more, as they did back then.
Somewhat more than 50 years ago, Anne was the cute young blonde from
Mt. Holyoke OC, learning rock-climbing from the MIT OC's tall and
capable Bert - and the rest is history. Their old photos recorded the
color of their clothing, and an anniversary cake echoed those colors -
as did their clothing at our celebration.
We met for a luncheon banquet at Ming Tsai's famous Blue Ginger
Restaurant in Wellesley, Massachusetts:
Above, from left to right: Gloria and Buzz Bloom, Bill Ryan,
Dick and Jill Miller, Anne Raphael, Ricky Ball, Charlotte Mann and Guy
Huse, Hub Seward.
Above, from left to right: Will and Nancy Crowther, Marty and
Phyllis Wilner, Frank and Edie Sandy, Bert Raphael, and the astonished
and/or astonishing Jay Ball.
We should give equal attention to the food we ate
because it, too, was rather astonishing. Appetizers included
crispy fried calamari with Thai dipping sauce and
a nice sushi wrap. My choice of entree, your average (not around
Boston!) miso-sake-marinated Alaskan butterfish, sported various
artistic presentations of fish roe, wasabi/soy sauce, etc. This photo
of it is from www.ming.com's photo gallery, because by then I was far
too busy enjoying the food and our friends!
After that excellent banquet, Jill (my resident
botanist) and I led a lovely walk on the Wellesley College campus,
through the boonies to its Greenhouse, a good long look at exotic
plants, and then back via the campus roads and onward to an evening
party at Jay and Ricky Ball's home in adjacent Natick. Again, I had too
much fun at the party to take photos, but here are two from our
Wellesley College walk. (Jill/Conn. College, Gloria/MIT and Anne/Mt.
Holyoke acting like they belong. :-)
(Guy, Nancy, Buzz, Frank, Edie and Phyllis rest up
before the walk back; Jill is standing.)
Congratulations again, to Bert'n'Anne Raphael on their BIG-50 Wedding
Anniversary! Here's one more memento of that, this web page.
Check back soon! I plan to add some of the prettier Wellesley College
Greenhouse flowers, and one avoid-the-urge-to-sit-on-it ottoman cactus.
Cheers from
